‘Jargonbuster’ of design terms

Design
The ‘design’ covers the overall look and structure of the document / project. This includes research and producing visuals showing the treatment of text, images, diagrams and use of colour, and making them work together to communicate the required messages in the right way and for the specific use. Once the design is agreed we would proceed with producing the complete artwork.

Design development
This is charged if design changes are requested to comments which were not specified in the original brief supplied by the client. Therefore, it is very important that the client includes as much information as possible in the brief from the outset. This includes likes and dislikes eg colour preference, style, size.

Page layout / artwork
The subsequent production of the complete document / item is the ‘page layout’ or ‘artwork’. This involves applying the agreed design to the whole project. Usually one set of authors amendments is included in the page layout / artwork cost and further changes are charged extra. In order to avoid unnecessary costs for amendments it is best to finalise the content (text and images) as best as possible before supplying it to the designer. Diagrams are very time consuming to produce as more work is involved in making them clear and so they are also charged as an extra.

Image management
This involves searching for pictures from image or royalty free libraries, sourcing of photographers or illustrators, and the logging, storing and returning of images including those supplied by the client.

Preparation of artwork for print
This involves preparation of digital artwork and associated files ready to handover for final production: preparing full dummies, page spreads with marked-up instructions for repro, and writing artwork etc to CDrom.

Project management
This includes meetings, clarification of the brief, schedules and planning, liaison with suppliers, proof reading, travel, etc.

Print management
Where print is invoiced direct to the client, print management is charged separately and includes liaison with printer for quotes, advice, delivery instructions, etc.
